Mathematics
The Mathematics department has always prided itself on identifying hidden talents amongst the vast number of pupils that they teach. Over the years, teachers have succeeded in challenging the brightest, and achieving exceptional results. This is achieved by most year 11 pupils sitting their GCSE examination early, with set 1 studying for an extra qualification, Additional Mathematics.
The department is able to boast having an impressive number of highly qualified staff, most of whom have the ability to teach to A Level standard. With a consistently good take up for the subject, we pride ourselves on also identifying any students with a flair for Mathematics and encourage them through the Further Mathematics options.
Many of our students and pupils have the opportunity to experience the many branches of the subject that are not always identified through the National Curriculum. Set 1 pupils throughout the school are entered for the UK Mathematical Challenges and the upper school have taken part in the University of Glamorgan Pop Quizzes; year 7 pupils enjoy a week of mathematical activities during ‘Maths Week’ which is led and run by pupils higher up the school and we are encouraged by the success of our Primary Numeracy Quiz, which is held during transition week for the prospective year 6 pupils.

Currently, the department can boast of its arrival into the 21st century! All classrooms have an interactive whiteboard and through the purchase of software, lessons are becoming more enjoyable and motivating through the use of this medium. We also encourage pupils to use the school’s website fully and regularly set homework’s through a virtual learning package.
