History
At Key Stage 3 pupils study the following:
- Year 7 - Wales and Britain in the Medieval World c.1000-1500, i.e. The Norman Invasion of England and Wales, Castles and Conquest, Medieval Life, the importance of the Church.
- Year 8 - Wales and Britian in the Early Modern World c.1500-1760, i.e. The power of the Monarchy with emphasis on Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, religious developments, civil war, republic and restoration.
- Year 9 - Wales in Industrial Britain c.1760-1914, i.e. Industrial change with emphasis on local history, social, religious and political change.
- Year 9 - Conflict in the Twentieth Century World i.e. The assassination of JFK and the Cold War, World War I, genocide in Rwanda and Modern Terrorism.
At Key Stage 4 pupils study the following:
- Study in Development : Medicine Through Time
This consists of 37.5% of the overall marks and focuses on change and continuity over time and on cause and consequence. You will study the development of medicine and public health from prehistoric times up to the present day.
- Study in Depth : The American West, 1840-95.
This unit makes up 37.5% of your overall marks. The study includes people, events and characteristics of the American West in the nineteenth century. The movement of white settlers westwards and the effect this had on the culture and lifestyle of the North American Indians is a main focus of the course.
- A Modern World Study : The Conflict in Northern Ireland
( Coursework)
This consists of 12.5% of the overall marks and it examines connections between past and present by considering one major event in Northern Ireland. A range of sources need to be studied including novels and film footage.
- History Around Us : Margam ( Coursework)
This final unit also consists of 12.5% of the overall marks and is based on the investigation of a “site”. Our site is Margam Abbey which we visit during the Summer Term of Year 10.
At A Level pupils study the following:
The course is divided into two units
1. British History 1830-48
2. European History 1878-1980
There are 3 modules at AS Level
1. Europe before World War I, alliances and ententes 1870-1914
2. Nazi Germany with focus on Nazi social, cultural and education policies.
3. Parliamentary Protest and Reform 1830-48 with particular focus on Chartism, Merthyr Rising and the Newport Rising as well as the Rebecca Riots.
There are 3 modules at A level
1. World War II and the Post War World
2. The Rebecca Riots ( Coursework)
3. Parliamentary protest in Britain 1830-48and Germany 1870-1980.
- For all of these units you are expected to read widely, make notes, evaluate primary and secondary sources, make presentations and write extended answers.
- History as a subject at both GCSE and A Level is a useful and relevant qualification. It is extremely helpful for a career in law, journalism, media, accountancy, tourism, management and many more.
