German
German has been part of the Heolddu curriculum since the school was established over 30 years ago. Hundreds of students have obtained qualifications in German at 'O' Level, GCSE and 'A' Level over the years as the department continues to buck the national trend and remains one of the more popular subjects in the option lines.
There are two experienced and innovative teachers in the department, who have both studied at German Universities, in Bonn and Heidelberg. Public examination results over many years have well exceeded the Welsh and UK averages. The department received a highly complimentary report in the most recent ESTYN inspection. The commitment to German language teaching over the years at Heolddu has been recognised in the by the German Ambassador to the UK, with an invitation for the Head of Department to the German Teachers Awards Ceremony at the German Embassy in London.
Heolddu was one of very few schools in Wales to be recognised in this way. The department works closely with others in the school to promote the German language and culture at every opportunity, eg German cafe scenes, World Cup football day. We also benefit form the fact that Caerphilly CB Council is 'twinned' with the German town of Ludwigsburg, near Stuttgart and help to organise visits to Germany. The most recent visit took place in July 2009. A group of Heolddu students spent a week in Germany visiting our partner school and various places of interest in the Stuttgart area. Heolddu will play host to some German students in 2010. Visit www.caerphilly.gov.uk and follow the link for twinning for more details.
