CAREERS EDUCATION & GUIDANCE
The department plays a key role in helping individuals make the best possible use of their capabilities in learning and work. Key themes which promote the ACCAC Learning Outcomes are :
· Self awareness and development
· Career opportunities
· Career planning
To encourage the ideal of ‘lifelong learning’ and ‘self monitoring’ amongst students the following processes are in place :
· Review
· Evaluation
· Planning
It is the department’s intention that students are helped to :
· Develop a positive self image
· Reflect and articulate their likes, dislikes, interests, values, aptitudes, strengths and abilities
· Be aware of skills and knowledge they already have
· Acquire support in their search for opportunities
· Research careers, courses, training and employment opportunities
· Demonstrate an awareness of the nature of work in their own and other people’s lives
· Access real or simulated experiences of work
· Understand the opportunities available to them on progression
· Gain access to advice, guidance and information
· Use strategies to support their career planning
· Use appropriate and realistic decision making strategies
· Use initiative and effective self presentation to promote themselves
· Manage the transition to a new situation.
Emphasis is placed on links with Progress File so that as wide a range of these experiences as possible is evidenced and recorded.

The provision, through a planned programme helps students to :
· Learn through work from the direct experience of work.
· Learn about work by gaining a better understanding of work and enterprise.
· Learn for work by developing skills for enterprise and employability.
Students have the opportunity to see the relevance of education in their future lives and are encouraged to acquire the skills needed for employment / self-employment in the future, so that they are also in a position to contribute to the area’s economic well being.
