Welcome to the Art and Design Department
Art and Design is a popular subject and is taught by specialist staff in all the key stages.
The school has a working kiln and ceramics are popular with the pupils.
Art at Heolddu can offer you the opportunity to use your imagination and to be creative in many different areas of Art and Design.

GCSE Art, AS Art and A level Art
What does the course teach?
Art teaches pupils to look at and respond to the world around them. They explore, experiment with and develop skills in a variety of media to communicate what they see, feel and imagine. Pupils experiment with colour, materials, textures and patterns through the following forms of artwork:-
• Drawing
• Painting
• Printing
• Textiles
• Sculpture
• Ceramics
• ICT
• Mixed Media
How is the course assessed?
Pupils build up a portfolio of work throughout the course. This coursework accounts for 60% of the final exam grade. There is also a final examination worth 40% of the final mark. Students will be given a 6 week preparatory period for the 10 hour timed exam. During the preparatory period students should complete another sketchbook with supporting studies
The GCSE grades awarded for Art range from GCSE grade A* - G.
All projects are assessed by school based staff and then a sample is moderated by external moderators. Work is graded and an overall grade for the qualification will be given to the student's at the end of the course.
Students will be given many opportunities to improve coursework and get the maximum marks possible. Catch up sessions and art rooms are available to Year 10, 11, 12 and 13 every lunchtime and after school sessions are available on Tuesday.
What careers does this course lead to?
GCSE Art is a good preparation for the study of AS’ Level and A’ Level Art.
At the end of this course, pupils can go on to study Art at college and then progress to a career in an art related field, for example, ceramicist, architect, graphic designer computer games designer, film maker, Art teacher, Special Educational Needs, Museums and Curator, Animation, primary school teacher, sculptor, illustrator, photographer advertising, set designer, furniture designer, interior designer, art therapist or community arts co-ordinator and many more.
