PUPIL’S MASTERPIECE CELEBRATES RAILWAY’S 150th ANNIVERSARY
Artistic pupils from Heolddu Comprehensive School in Bargoed have unveiled a mural at the town’s railway station in recognition of the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Rhymney Railway Line in 1858.
Artistic pupils from Heolddu Comprehensive School in Bargoed have unveiled a mural at the town’s railway station in recognition of the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Rhymney Railway Line in 1858.
Sponsored by Arriva Trains Wales, nine pupils started on the project in April 2008 and with the support of teachers Phil Hughes and Alison Cridland, a design was chosen depicting various railway locomotion through the decades.
Speaking on behalf the school, Alison Cridland, said: “This is the first mural we have created that has gone on display at a railway station. The pupils have put a great deal of time and effort into the project, often giving up their lunch hour to come and work on the mural.”
She continued: “We are very proud of their achievement and hope that it brings many years of enjoyment to passengers and staff at the station.”
Jez Williams, station manager for Arriva Trains Wales, said: “We are delighted to have been able to work with the pupils and give them an opportuntiy to demonstrate their creative ability. The mural provides a welcoming centrepiece for passengers to admire while waiting for trains and taxis.”
In recognition of their participation in the project, Arriva Trains Wales has offered the pupils and teachers a complimentary day out by train.
